In September 2018, a World Trade Organization (WTO) Dispute Settlement Panel review was established at the request of Australia. Complaints focused on measures governing the sales of wine in Canada, particularly Canada’s federal excise exemption for 100% Canadian-made wines. If a WTO ruling is made this summer against Canada, the wine industry across our country, including Niagara, will be severely impacted. Thousands of jobs and livelihoods could be at risk. Canadian officials have confirmed the likelihood of losing the excise exemption in a WTO ruling is very high, and Australia appears unwilling to negotiate. Do you support the Government of Canada replacing the excise duty exemption with a permanent, trade legal agricultural program of greater or equal value to get the Canadian wine economy moving again?
